Well, Disney has just released their pick for the lead role of Ariel. The actress and singer Halle Bailey will take on the part in the new Live version of The Little Mermaid. First of all, Yea!!! I'm a huge fan of The Little Mermaid. It's my second best musical animation, after Lion King of course. Just a few weeks ago I was telling my daughters how much I hope they will do a remake of the movie! And to my surprise, it's here. But not just a remake, but the live action version. Even better! But, that's not the big story here. Some people seem to have some issues with Ariel being played by a Black actress. Well...didn't Johathan Taylor Thomas play the voice of young Simba in the original Lion King animation film? And they were in Africa. And both of Simba's parents were black. I'm just saying. And even as a young 16 year, back then it was kind of mind boggling to me that Disney chose a White actor, instead of a Black actor to be young and old Simba. But they used the Black actor Jason Weaver to sing for young Simba. Where's the irony in that ? Things that make you go hmmmm! So, what's the big issue of a black actress playing as Ariel? Many people feel that Halley Bailey is a excellent choice for the reprise role. And why not? She's a great actress, an even better singer and has a beautiful face. Sounds like a good Ariel to me! All I'm saying is, if a White actor can be Simba, then a Black actress can be Ariel! Well, let me know what you guys think.
